Your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns at rest. It accounts for about 60-70% of your total daily calorie burn, which means that even if you exercise an hour daily, it still accounts for only about 10-20% of your total calorie burn in a day. Knowing your RMR can help you set realistic fitness goals and make sure you're eating the right amount of calories to reach those goals.

Struggling to lose fat? Knowing your RMR lets you know how many calories you can eat and still maintain a calorie deficit. Having a caloric deficit is required to lose weight --> even if you only eat "clean" foods.

Struggling to gain muscle? Knowing your RMR guides you toward how many more calories you need to eat to maintain a calorie surplus. Having a surplus of calories is required to gain weight, whether it is lean mass or fat mass. How you work out will help determine what is built with those excess calories.

There are a few different ways to calculate your RMR:

  • One way is to use an online calculator. These are based on generic formulas that fit only a fraction of the population.

  • A better way is to have it measured using an indirect calorimeter. This measures your own body’s exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide to determine your personalized RMR. It doesn't get more personalized that your own breath!

When your test is complete, the coach will sit with you to help you understand what the results mean in relation to your health and fitness goals, and elp you create a basic plan for going forward.
