This week, I had a flashback to my freshman year in high school:
I was on the volleyball team, and this particular week, we were in the weight room. Mind you - in the mid-80s, fourteen-year-old girls didn't lift weights, even if they were athletes!
On this day, we were squatting. It was the first time in my life that I ever tried squatting with any weight at all. And our coach had us load up the barbell with so it was 135#! I clearly remember the full-sized metal plates we used.
I got under the barbell and with very little instruction, I squatted.
And I fell right to the ground.
Thankfully, we had spotters set up on each end of the barbell, and my teammates passed the impromptu "trust test"!
The coach simply said, "Okay. You're weak," and she told someone else to get under the bar....
😳 I was devastated and embarrassed. I felt like a failure and I never, ever, ever wanted to go back into that weight room. I expected her to know what was possible for a rookie lifter and to understand that not every girl could lift the same weight.
Of course, I realize now that the problem wasn't that I was weak. The problem was that she was ill-prepared to lead young girls in a weight room. She was a great volleyball coach, though.
When we sit down with a potential new client, we always ask, "What are your expectations of us?" We want to be sure we can meet those expectations. If there are unrealistic expectations, then we will try to rein them in - if we can't then we'll tell that person that we can't be "that" for them.
It's more important to us that we create a solid working relationship built on mutual honesty, trust, and respect, over making a sale just for the sake of making a sale.
So you should think about it: what expectations do you have for a coach?
